In Aleta's room, Daphne made herself comfortable, sitting cross-legged on the bed and Aleta leaned against the wall, arms folded.
"Why are you looking for him?" Aleta asked quietly.
"Why are you?" Daphne countered.
She could play that game too and was not about to be made the victim of this situation.
"Revenge," Aleta answered bluntly.
"Ahhh...I should have guessed that."
Aleta did not react and pushed herself away from the wall, walking across the room to the banging shutters and securing them tighter. "Now it is your turn."
"Well," Daphne began, sighing. "In simple words, he stole something that does not belong to him."
Aleta could see that Daphne did not mean to divulge any more information on the matter and neither did she, so the conversation ended there, with each girl retreating into her own mind.
It was clear to Aleta that now she would have no hope of shaking off the Human, for they were in search of the same person. Aleta did not like having company and Daphne was no exception. For just a second, she contemplated giving up on her quest. Then she remembered why she had started it in the first place and the anger began to boil inside of her once more.
Daphne, on the other hand, was going over what the innkeeper had said. So, Hammond had rented a room? That was good. But which room? The innkeeper would not say. That was bad. How would they find out which room was his? Either they could do it the easy way and just knock on every door, or they could do it the hard way. They could scale each wall on the outside and look through every window in a hailstorm. Neither way sounded appealing to Daphne.
"Room 14," Aleta suddenly whispered.
"What about it?" Daphne whispered back.
Aleta tiptoed over to the door and placed one ear on the smooth wood, listening carefully.
"Someone has gone into it."
"How do you know?" Daphne asked.
Aleta pursed her lips and turned her head slightly to look at Daphne in an exasperated manner. "Hearing, remember?"
Daphne raised both hands and shrugged her shoulders in a gesture that said she meant no offense. She got off the bed, joining Aleta at the door. The fact that the Cievo had exceptional hearing had slipped her mind.
She had not missed the actual reaction from Aleta though and took it as a good sign. A reaction from her was good, no matter what it was. After spending a week together in a small ship cabin, Daphne had discovered that her companion's way of showing her distaste was to pretend you were not there. But now, she had reacted.
Now, I'm getting somewhere, Daphne thought.
For some inexplicable reason, she found that she actually enjoyed being around Aleta. It was a new experience and, as the ocean had proved, very exciting.
"Who do you think it is?" Daphne asked quietly, her thoughts moving back to the current problem.
"How should I know?"
"Oh, I'm sorry! I just thought you knew everything!" Daphne whispered sarcastically.
Aleta ignored the remark and listened closely for any movement.
